  16. <p>Answering five deaths, Israel deports hundreds of Palestinians
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     For Palestinians living in the occupied territories,
  19. deportations of their brethren evoke fears that one day the
  20. Israelis will expel them all from their homes. So it was on
  21. Friday, when Israeli authorities deported to Lebanon more than
  22. 400 alleged activists from the Muslim fundamentalist movements
  23. Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The expulsions were in retaliation for
  24. the shooting of four Israeli soldiers and the Hamas'
  25. kidnap-murder of a border policeman. In the Gaza Strip, at
  26. weekend demonstrations to protest the expulsions, six
  27. Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli troops.

  29. <p>     The U.N. Security Council condemned the deportations,
  30. contending that they violated the Geneva Conventions. The
  31. expulsions also threatened the Middle East peace talks. In fact,
  32. warned the P.L.O., the Palestinian delegation will quit
  33. negotiations if the deportations are not reversed. Israelis and
  34. Palestinians in the territories are bracing for more trouble.
  35. Hamas has sworn to avenge the deportations, a likely trigger for
  36. another heavy Israeli reaction.
